Keeping gums healthy between visits

12 August 2026

Gum health is easy to ignore until brushing starts to sting. By then, plaque has usually sat along the gumline long enough to inflame the tissue. The good news is that most of this is reversible if you catch it early.

Brush twice a day with a soft brush, angling toward the gum rather than scrubbing the tooth face. Floss or use interdental brushes once daily. If your gums bleed, do not stop. Gentle, consistent cleaning is what calms them.

At DOD Clinics we still recommend a professional scaling on a schedule that matches your risk. Some people need it every six months. Others, especially if they have crowded teeth or wear braces, benefit from closer follow-up.

If you notice persistent swelling, bad taste, or gums that look like they are pulling away from the teeth, book a dental consultation. Those signs deserve a look before they turn into deeper periodontal work.
